5 heart-health numbers everyone should know

Your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI and resting heart rate tell a clearer story than how you feel. Here's what each number means and where it should sit.

Why a few numbers matter so much

Heart disease rarely announces itself. For years it builds quietly while you feel completely well, which is exactly why a small set of routine measurements is worth knowing by heart.

Tracking these five numbers over time tells your doctor far more than a single reading on a bad day, and lets you catch trouble while it is still easy to reverse.

1. Blood pressure

Aim for around 120/80 mmHg. Readings consistently at or above 140/90 mmHg suggest hypertension, the single biggest driver of stroke and heart failure. It causes no symptoms, so the only way to know is to measure it.

2. Cholesterol and 3. blood sugar

A lipid profile breaks cholesterol into LDL (the harmful kind, ideally under 100 mg/dL) and HDL (protective, the higher the better). For blood sugar, a fasting glucose under 100 mg/dL or an HbA1c under 5.7% keeps you out of the diabetic range.

Both are checked with a simple blood test, usually after an overnight fast. If they drift upward, diet and activity changes often bring them back before medication is needed.

4. BMI and 5. resting heart rate

A body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 is the broad healthy range, though waist size matters too. A resting heart rate of 60–100 beats per minute is normal; fitter people often sit lower.

Know these five, write them down after each check, and you give yourself a real head start against the most common cause of preventable death.
